Frequently asked questions.
How do I know if I need therapy?
Feeling unsure if therapy is the right move? Here’s a checklist to see if you might benefit from some professional support:
Emotional Overload: You find yourself overwhelmed by feelings of sadness, anxiety, anger, or hopelessness more often than you'd like.
Stuck in a Rut: Things that used to bring you joy or motivation now feel dull or pointless.
Relationship Struggles: You’re having repeated conflicts or communication issues with friends, family, or coworkers.
Life Transitions: Big changes—like moving, changing jobs, ending relationships, or losing a loved one—feel harder to handle than expected.
Unhealthy Habits: You notice behaviors like excessive drinking, overeating, or withdrawal from social activities creeping into your life.
Physical Symptoms Without Medical Cause: Sleeplessness, headaches, or stomach issues that don’t respond to usual treatment might have emotional roots.
Feeling Isolated: You feel lonely or disconnected even when around people.
Seeking Clarity: You want to understand yourself better or find more meaning and purpose.
Past Trauma: Experiences that still haunt you or affect your daily life.
Need for Tools: You want practical strategies to manage stress, improve your communication, or boost your confidence.
If any of these hit home, therapy could be the superhero sidekick you never knew you needed. It’s not just for “crisis mode”—it’s for building a happier, healthier you. So why not give yourself the VIP treatment? After all, even superheroes need a little guidance sometimes.
What is therapy like?
Therapy is a personal coach for your mind—talk freely, no judgment. Sessions mix deep chats, problem-solving, and homework to build new skills. Like a mental gym: tough but rewarding. You learn, grow healthier habits, and gain tools to handle life confidently. All tailored to your unique journey.
How will I know if I’m ready for therapy?
Curious about therapy but not sure if it’s right for you? We offer a free 15-minute consultation to answer your questions, ease your mind, and help you take the first step — no strings attached. Think of it as a quick hello to see if we vibe before diving in.
What happens during the first session?
The first therapy session is the exciting start of your personal story reboot. You’ll chat with your therapist about why you’re here—whether it’s anxiety, self-doubt, or something else. It’s all about sharing your story, goals, and even those quirky moments that make you, you. You’ll get comfortable, ask questions, and set the vibe for a judgment-free, team effort to unlock your best self.
How long are my sessions?
Each session lasts 45 minutes—just enough time to dive deep, share your thoughts, and start making progress without feeling rushed. Think of it as your personal half-hour escape, with a little extra time to unpack and refocus before you head back to the world. Let’s make every minute count!
Why talk to a therapist when I have friends or emotional support animal?
Friends and emotional support animals offer love, comfort, and companionship. Therapists, however, are trained guides who help you tackle tough emotions, spot patterns, and develop personalized tools. Think of friends as cheerleaders, pets as your sidekicks, and therapists as mental health coaches steering you toward lasting growth in a judgment-free space. While friends and pets lift you up, therapists help you climb higher.
What if I don’t feel comfortable talking about something?
It’s totally okay to feel uncomfortable talking about certain things. Therapy is your safe space, and you get to set the pace. If something feels too heavy or private right now, just say so. We can focus on what feels right for you, and when you’re ready, we’ll tackle the tough stuff together—no pressure, no rush. Your comfort matters most.
Does needing therapy mean I am “crazy”?
Needing therapy does not mean you’re crazy. In fact, it means you’re human—and human beings sometimes need a little extra help navigating life’s twists and turns. Therapy is like mental maintenance: just as you’d take your car in for a tune-up, your mind deserves some TLC too. Seeking therapy shows strength, self-awareness, and the courage to grow, not weakness or “craziness.” Everyone can benefit from talking to someone trained to listen and offer guidance—whether you're facing big challenges or just want to understand yourself better. So no, needing therapy doesn’t mean you’re crazy; it means you’re brave enough to take care of your mental health.
Will anyone find out that I am going to therapy?
Nope, your secret is safe with us! Therapy is a judgment-free zone, and confidentiality is a huge deal here. Your therapist won't spill the beans unless you give the green light or if there's a serious safety concern (which is super rare), like if you’re a threat to yourself or someone else, or if there’s reported child or elder abuse. So, unless you decide to tell someone, going to therapy stays your little secret. You’ve got this!
What if I don’t feel comfortable with my therapist?
First off, you’re not alone! Finding the right therapist is kind of like dating — sometimes the spark just isn’t there, and that’s totally okay. Therapy is a personal journey, and feeling comfortable with your guide is key. If you’re not feeling it, it’s okay to speak up: share your concerns with your therapist or consider trying someone new. Remember, your mental wellness deserves a match made in counseling heaven! So go ahead, trust your gut, because the right therapist will help you turn your personal story into a masterpiece.
How will I know if therapy is working?
Knowing if therapy is working isn't always as obvious as a neon sign flashing "Success!" Here are some playful, yet practical, ways to spot progress:
You’re Feeling Heard: When your therapist really gets you, and you leave sessions feeling lighter, that’s a major win.
Small Wins Add Up: Maybe you’re managing stress better, communicating more clearly, or sleeping a bit more soundly. These little changes count!
You’re Asking New Questions: Therapy often sparks curiosity about yourself. If you find yourself thinking about patterns or emotions in fresh ways, that’s growth.
You Notice Shifts in Perspective: Suddenly, things that used to throw you off feel less intense or easier to handle.
You’re Practicing New Skills: Applying what you learn in therapy to real life—like setting boundaries or coping strategies—is a clear indicator progress is happening.
Tough Feelings Get Less Tangly: Emotions may still visit, but they don’t overstay their welcome quite as often.
You Feel More “You”: Overall, you start to feel more authentic and aligned with who you want to be.
Remember, therapy isn’t always about speedy fixes or constant sunshine. It’s a journey with peaks, valleys, and plenty of learning curves. If you’re moving forward—even in baby steps—you’re rocking it!
“Don’t be afraid to do something different if what you’ve been doing isn’t working.”
Malcolm-Jamal Warner

What if I don’t have insurance and cannot afford therapy?
Here at Within These Walls Counseling, we know that finding the right help shouldn’t break your piggy bank. That’s why our sliding scale fees adjust based on what you earn, so no one misses out on the chance to feel better. No insurance or worried about costs? Just ask! We’re here to help you discover the option that fits you and your budget best. Because feeling good shouldn’t come with any fine print.
Are there any fees for a missed or cancelled appointment?
We get it—life happens! Just a quick heads-up: if you don’t cancel your appointment at least 24 hours in advance, there’s a $50 cancellation fee. No call, no show = $100 fee. Insurance does not cover these fees and these are considered out of pocket. Please cancel or reschedule in advance to avoid charges. We have a cancellation fee to respect our therapists’ time and keep your spot reserved. It helps us stay fair to all clients and offer consistent, quality care. Thanks for understanding! Thanks for keeping us in the loop! If your therapist misses a session, you don’t pay. We value your time and will try to inform you ahead.
What if I am running late or can’t make my appointment?
We offer a 15-minute grace period for late arrivals. But don’t forget—your session will still wrap up at the originally scheduled time. If you find that you are unable to make your scheduled appointment, please be sure to let us know as soon as possible—either by phone, text or email. This way, we can open up that spot to someone else who might really be in need of it. Your timely notice helps us keep things running smoothly and ensures everyone gets the support they deserve! Remember, our cancellation policy may apply!
How often will we meet?
Every client has an individualized plan—because, hey, one size definitely does not fit all! Some might want weekly check-ins to keep the momentum going, while others prefer a rhythm that suits their unique journey.
Do you offer online or in-person sessions?
We believe therapy should fit your lifestyle—not the other way around. That’s why we offer a variety of session formats to meet your unique needs. Prefer the classic face-to-face experience? Our cozy in-person sessions have got you covered. Love lounging in your favorite PJs with a laptop? Online therapy brings the comfort and convenience of your own space right to your counselor’s couch. And for our adventure-loving, nature-inspired clients, we take therapy outside—literally! Imagine processing through life's twists surrounded by trees, sunshine, and fresh air. Therapy, your way.
Where are you located?
You'll find us at 1860 SW Fountainview Blvd, Ste. 100, right off I-95 and St. Lucie West Blvd. Stress less about the drive—your next breakthrough session is just around the corner!
What does a online session look like?
You’ll receive a reminder text or email with the session link. Just click on the "Join Link" when it’s time. We recommend hopping on 5 minutes early to make sure everything runs smoothly—because nobody likes surprise tech troubles! You will need to provide camera and microphone access and can test them prior to beginning your session. Once all tech problems have been resolved, you will be placed in the waiting room, where the journey to your mental wellness begins—just a few clicks away from feeling better! For the best experience, pick a quiet and private spot where interruptions are as rare as a unicorn sighting. This way, you can let your guard down, speak your truth, and focus fully on what matters most—YOU. No distractions, no background noise, just a safe space for honest conversations. Trust us, your future self will thank you!
How do I start therapy?
Just give us a quick ring and watch the magic happen! Once we lock in your very first session, we'll shoot you an email faster than you can say "therapy," packed with consent forms and intake assessments for you to breeze through. We'll even set up autopay to keep things hassle-free. Keep in mind, a credit card is needed to cover private pay sessions, co-pays, or any no-shows. Easy peasy, done and dusted!
